Sonny Smith of Sonny & the Sunsets had this little dream…
Myself and Sal were at some sort of special conclusion to a trip. I had a thank you note composed in lousy Spanish, a crinkled up note saved for this very occasion. I pulled it out and was overwhelmed with nervousness or anxiety, the kind you feel like when taking an oral test in school. “I want to thank you for this special tour of Cuba” I said. And then more things I can’t remember…Only the whole dream seemed to take place through the perspective of a third unknown party who was watching us as if from the end of a long rain gutter…
It is strange how simple memories and dreams can carry such weight, how they sometimes stand out because they formed with crisp clarity for unknown reasons. Now you might be wondering who the Sal in Sonny’s dream is. It turns out Sal is a reoccurring dream character, an invention of his subconscious. He explained her like this, “I think she is a compendium of ex’s, a vague composite, she always shows up so I always write about her. She’s been paying visits for over a decade.” Sonny dreams a lot and chronicles some of them here. In my household we’ve been listening to Sonny & the Sunset’s album Tomorrow is Alright a lot lately. The man dreams, writes and makes music. Have a listen..
